New Testament
Christ's Circumcision
In the Gospel of Luke we learn that Christ was circumcised. This was in keeping with the Law of Moses.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Don't assume that if circumcision was good enough for Christ, then it is good enough for you. It is not the same procedure today. (That is the reason this site uses the term Posthectomy)
Note that this was biblical circumcision. Posthectomy (modern medical circumcision) is not derived from biblical circumcision but a more radical practice that developed later.
Make sure to read Post-Biblical Changes
Fulfilled Law
There are many scriptures that explain that circumcision is no longer necessary.
1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Note how "yoke" is alluding to the law of Moses.
2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.
3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.
4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.
5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Study Questions:
-
Circumcision may not benefit (availeth) anything, but are there spiritual costs?
-
If we accept circumcision do we put ourselves under the "whole law"?
-
If we accept circumcision are we rejecting Christ's yoke for a yoke of bondage?
-
Read 3 Nephi 23:6-14 and 3 Nephi 27:3-5. When Christ comes again might He chasize us for not understanding or taking scriptures on circumcision lightly?
-
When Christ was resurrected what wounds did he retain? Why did he retain some wounds and not others? (ie from the crown of thorns, and scourging.)
